HomeMy WebLinkAboutOrdinance No. 2026-17 ORDINANCE NO. 2026-17 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS, DECLARING THE RESULTS OF THE MUNICIPAL ELECTION HELD MAY 2, 2026, CONCERNING THE ELECTION OF COUNCILMEMBERS FOR POSITION NUMBERS TWO (2) AND FIVE(5) OF THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD CITY COUNCIL; AND PROVIDING FOR THE EFFECTIVE DATE. ************************************************************************************* WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Friendswood on January 5, 2026, ordered a general election to be held on May 2,2026,for the purpose of electing Councilmembers for Position Numbers Two (2)and Five(5)of the City of Friendswood;and WHEREAS, on May 2, 2026, the above-referenced election was held under and pursuant to the provisions of the ordinance calling such election as well as the provisions of the City's Charter and state law;and WHEREAS, on May 8, 2026, the early voting ballot board of Galveston County met to qualify ballots by mail and to verify and count provisional ballots pursuant to Chapter 65 of the Texas Election Code; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Chapter 67 of the Texas Election Code, the City Council of the City of Friendswood, at a council meeting held on May 12, 2026, canvassed the returns of the general election called for the purpose of electing a Councilmember to Position Number Two(2)and a Councilmember to Position Number Five(5)from the City at-large(the "Election");and WHEREAS,the City Council hereby finds that(i)the notices of the Election were properly given as required by law and as provided in the ordinance calling such election; (ii)the Election was regularly held according to law;(iii)the returns thereof were duly made;and(iv)the Election Judges have certified the results of the Election as hereinafter set out;and WHEREAS,the City Council,having duly canvassed the returns of the Election,finds that the total votes cast at the Election were as follows: COUNCILMEMBER, POSITION NO.TWO(2) Sally Branson 2,967 votes Shawna Talton 2,215 votes COUNCILMEMBER, POSITION NO. FIVE(5) Randy Hale 2,649 votes Joe Matranga 2,572 votes (collectively"Election Returns");and WHEREAS,the City Council of the City of Friendswood finds the Election Returns set out above are accurate and correct and that no election protest or contest has been filed with the City Council or instituted in connection with the Election Returns;NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD,STATE OF TEXAS: Section 1. The facts and matters set forth in the preamble of this ordinance are hereby found to be true and correct. Section 2. That the City Council of the City of Friendswood, Texas, further finds that the notice of the Election was duly and properly given as required by law and as provided in the ordinance calling the Election and that the Election was duly and regularly held and the returns thereof duly and regularly made by the proper officials of said Election and in all things according to law. Section 3. That Sally Branson received a majority of the votes cast at the election for the office of Councilmember, Position Number Two (2), and accordingly, Sally Branson is hereby declared elected to the office of Councilmember, Position Number Two(2)of the City of Friendswood. Section 4. That Randy Hale received a majority of the votes cast at the election for the office of Councilmember, Position Number Five (5), and accordingly, Randy Hale is hereby declared elected to the office of Councilmember,Position Number Five(5)of the City of Friendswood. Section 5. This ordinance shall take effect immediately from and after its passage by the City Council of the City of Friendswood,Texas.
