FRIENDSWOOD DRIVE, FRIENDSWOOQ,TEXAS,WITH THE FOLLOWING PRESENT CONSTITUTING A QUORUM: MAYOR KIM BRIZENDINE MAYOR PRO-TEM JERRY ERICSSON COURr!LMEMRER LAU°A E�'VING COUNCILMEMBER TRACY GOZA COUNCILMEMBER DAVID J. H. SMITH COUNCILMEMBER MEL MEASELES CITY MANAGER RON COX ASSISTANT CiTY SECRETARY LINDA THORNTON Councilmember Shannon Kimmel and City Secretary Deloris McKenzie were absent from the meeting. O;JU t'IVI 5t'.Cl.IH4 JCjJIUfV Mayor Brizendine called the meeting to order. The Invocation was given by City Manager Ron Cox. Mayor Brizendine led the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States and to the State of Texas. RESOLUTION **Councilmember Measeles moved to approve Resolution No. R2004-10 - A Resolution canvassing the returns and declaring the results of the General Election held May 15, 2004,for the purpose of electing two(2) _ ._ Councilmembere to the City Council of the City of Friendswood. For Position No. 4—David J.H. Smith 825 and for Position No. 6— Mel Measeles 1035. Seconded by Councilmember Ericsson. The motion was approved unanimously. OATHS OF OFFICE Galveston County Judge Jim Yarbrough administered the Oaths of Office and swore in David J.H. Smith for Council Posiiior� Ivo. 4 and Mel Measeles ror Position No. 6. Councilmember David J.H. Smith spoke regarding his experience and what he had learned going through the election process and stated Mayor,fellow Councilmembers,City Manager Ron Cox, Judge Yarbrough,former Mayors, Drainage District, and people we have here tonight, Thank you. He further stated he would like to thank everyone, firsf recognizing Evelyn Newman; his campaign treasurer and "second Mom" for all of her support and hard work, would like fo publicly thank new friends Bili and Wendy Pope along wifh their family and children, stated fhat their support gave him continued enthusiasm, thanks to partner Chuck at the real esfate ofFice and all of the office staff for their support, thanks fo Becky Davidson and Steve Pate for the phone calls that were made on his behalf, thanks fo Harold Whitaker and Gary Harris for their wisdom and experience and allowing him to model himself after those people that have made good choices in the past, but 05/24/04 2165 most importantly would like to thank his family because they know of his love for doing this, that being of service is a part of him and has truly enjoyed what he has been able to do so far and looks forward to it, but recognizes that it is fheir sacrifice for the hours that go into it that really is made, thanks to Carlie and Casey and most of all, wife Danielle for allowing him to do this and giving him the opportunity to give back to their com m u nify. Councilmember Mel Measeles stated he would like to congratulate Councilmember Smith on being re-elected and reported the campaign he ran was outstanding, and would like to thank David's family for allowing him to and for them to give him up to serve the City,would also like to thank all the citizens here tonight who are the backbone of the community and are the ones that really make the system work. He stated over the years one of the things that he has learned being on Council is that you are not acting as an individual, you are here as a team. Council has to act as a team in order to get anything done and stated that is what he will continue to do, to pledge that he will be a team member for this Council and to do whatever he can to make sure of the SUCCeSS G`iilC p`Ol�l CII I IJ ll lcll WC 1 IQVC. TI I�I C ar�JOI 1��I Cc1I CXCILII Il�tiiii iyS COiT11i1�C u�i�ti ic fUiUi c ai iu i�liS IS one of the most exciting times that Friendswood has probably ever experienced with some of the new developments that are coming in and some of the challenges and some of the opportunities that we have, thinks it is going to be really exciting and hopes that each one of you will continue to stay involved in the community like you have in the past, stated that one of the things that he has always tried to do on Council is to keep in mind the quality of life here in Friendswood, every decision that he votes on that comes in to Council he weighs, "Is this going to be a quality of life decision for the benefit of the citizens?", and thinks that it is very important so would like to thank everyone once again and is iooking forward to serving the remaining three y�ars. T"ar,k ycu. Councilmember Ewing stated congratulations to you both and it has been great working with you and stated she is glad they will be together at least for two more years, for her anyway. Councilmember Ericsson stated congratulations to both of you. Councilmember Goza stated congratulations to both of you. Mayor Brizendine stated that that the City is blessed to have quality people to step up and volunteer their time and sacrifice. Councilmember Measeles has been doing that for a hundred years and it is good to have him back. It is good to have some fresh blood, David Smith, back with us too. So, congratulations to both of you and thank you for your sacrifice, thank you for your time, effort and energies. We have got a very special grou p of people here and I do not think there is an issue too big for us. It is nice to have these guys on board � again. Thank you all very much.
