HomeMy WebLinkAboutBicycle Committee Minutes 1995-03-23 Regular i Friendswood Bicycle Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes March 23, 1995 Call to Order. The Bicycle Advisory committee met on the above date at 7:00 p.m. In attendance were Sherie Warminski, Mel Measeles, Mike McNabb, Joe Tennison and Todd Yeager. Captain Jimmy Holland of the Friendswood Police Department (FPD) was also in attendance. February Minutes. The February 23rd minutes were approved as written. Report from the Chair. Sherie reported that the Bike Ramble/Ride was approved by the Centennial Event Committee. They would like us to submit an article for the Journal about the bike ride by April 15. Shari will draft the article. The committee also needs to approve the use of the official Centennial logo if we choose to use it for the bike ride. Parks Master Plan. There was nothing new to report. Bike Ramble. Joe reported that t-shirts from Crafty T's would cost $4.65 for 1 color design, $5.35 for 2 colors. He passed around some t-shirt logo designs he'd drawn for the committee to review. Committee members liked a design with the official Friendswood centennial logo and an old-fashioned big wheel bicycle. Joe will get with Crafty T's for a final copy design to submit to the Centennial Event Committee for approval. Joe will also check with Jon Branson on the numbers and sizes of t-shirts ordered for previous bike rambles to estimate a number to order for this bike ride. Other possible giveaway items included centennial pins (which may be available through the city secretary's office), water bottles and bandanas. Mike reported that he had checked out some possible routes for the ride and the lighting isn't too good around town at night. Discussion followed about a day ride and the committee approved a motion for a morning ride beginning at 7:15 a.m. It was suggested that the ride have 2 routes with a rest stop at a halfway point and a chase wagon to follow-up on any stragglers. Mike will plan some preliminary routes for the committee to ride and check out. Mel will check into halfway point rest stops. The starting point for the bike ride was discussed: it will need shade, access to restrooms, and a place for a possible breakfast after the race. Stevenson Park was the preferred choice because of the new pavilion, restrooms, shade trees and the central location. Mel will check on the park's availability for the morning of Saturday, July 1. All committee members can check with groups who may want to cook and serve a breakfast after the ride. Sherie offered to write a press release about the bike ride. Helmut Use Program. Captain Jimmy Holland, FPD gave his endorsement of the helmut use program. He said the police department would need clear guidelines for the program: safety rules, ages of participants. Committee members felt that there should not be an age limit on participation. Captain Holland suggested filling out a ticket similar to the ones that the FPD uses and r- following up with letters recognizing the citizens. Mike will gevelop guidelines i for the program and get with Captain Holland. Joe reported the Chamber of Commerce board voted to support a giveaway program. Joe will put some information in the Chamber's flyer by April 20 to mail out to the chamber membership. Captain Holland mentioned a sticker company in California that supplies the FPD with Junior badges. New Business. Captain Holland reported that money is included in the 1995 budget for the purchase of bicycles (maybe 2) for the police department. He said the main problem with bicycle patrols in Friendswood is that the city is too spread out to patrol on bicycles. He indicated that patrol cars may be modified to carry bicycles; then police could patrol individual neighborhoods on bicycle. Officers would need training first. Captain Holland also said that there would be a bike auction late this summer and offered to keep some bikes if the committee sees a need for them. Adjournment. The meeting was adjourned at 9:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Barbara Fawcett
