September 28, 1995
Call to Order. The Bicycle Advisory committee met on the above date at
7:00 p.m. In attendance were Sherie Warminski, Mike McNabb, Mel Measles,
Barb Fawcett, and Doug Knuepper, Friendswood Community Development
Director. Mike Wright from the city of Alvin was also present.
Report from Chair. No report.
County Wide Bicycle Trails. Mike Wright reviewed Alvin's plans for bicycling.
They plan to stripe bike lanes which will connect neighborhoods with schools
and plants. Mike discussed getting other towns in the county to connect up with
existing and new bike trails.
Sunset Hike/Bike Trails. Doug Knuepper reported that the city has budgeted
$52,000 in 95-96 for improvements to Sunset Drive. There was discussion
about using Sunset to link main areas to the schools with 8 foot bike trails. The
committee felt that the city should start with the west side first and do as much as
you can with the existing funds. Mel and Sherie will visit Ron Cox with our
input. Mel asked Doug for a blowup map of Sunset with schools and parks
detailed.
Helmet Ordinance. There was discussion on a bicycle helmet ordinance for
Friendswood (possibly for bicyclists 18 years and under) which would be similar
to the City of Houston's. The committee will get more supporting information
and statistics regarding EMS, insurance costs, and the cost of treatment for
head damage.
Ticket to Ride program. Joe had a sample of a citation/coupon that looked
good. When the sponsors are lined up, we'll be ready to go with the program.
Bicycle Friendly designation. A motion was made and seconded to pursue the
process of designating Friendswood a bicycle friendly community by the
League of American Bicyclists. The motion passed. Sherie will put a package
together.
Adjournment. The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
