The Bicycle Advisory committee met on the above date at 7:30 p.m. In attendance were Sherie Warminski, Mel Measles, Barb Fawcett, Joe Tennison, Sandy McHone and Todd Yeager. Jay Haldiman, an interested citizen and bicycist, was also present. Report from Chair. Sherie and Mel gave an update on the Sunset Drive project. The city will go out for bids for the bike lanes in January. Sherie also mentioned that we needed additional members for the committee. She will check with Delores McKenzie in the City Secretary's Office regarding an advertisement for new members. Bicycle Friendly Designation. Nothing has been done yet to request a designation for the city. Todd agreed to prepare an information package. Sunset Hike/Bike Trails. The bike lane will be an 8 foot wide asphalt strip beginning at FM 528. A concern was mentioned about cars parking or driving on the lane. Stencils or signs on the lane to designate its use could deter cars as well as asking the police department to assist with strict enforcement. Mel will ask Doug Knuepper for an updated status on the project. He will be asked to come to our next meeting. Additional discussion followed regarding designating some if not all city sidewalks as hike/bike trails. Todd will invite Captain Jimmy Holland of the Friendswood Police Dept. to the next meeting to discuss ordinances regarging using sidewalks as bike lanes. Mel raised a question about rollerbladers and whether thay can use bike lanes or sidewalks. We may want to consider rollerblader use on hike/bike trails. There was discussion about pushing for bike trails in the new Centennial park with the Parks department. Joe said that he would try to make the next Parks board meeting and take our input. Planning and Zoning (P and Z) member. Our committee should have a member from the P and Z committee. Sherie will check with the P and Z committee chairman Benny Baker regarding the name of a member who might join our meetings. Ticket to Ride program. The citation/coupon form was finalized but we still don't have sponsors. -Sherie and Joe will start calling folks to see if they can line up some sponsorship. 4th of July. There was discussion about a bike ride for the summer. Saturday, June 29 may be better date than the 4th of July weekend. Barb will check with Mike Wright in Alvin on the tour de Bras dates in case of a conflict. The committee felt that our event didn't need to be a fund raiser. Breaking even would be acceptable. We have a budget of $2500.00. Registration fees could be $10 for adults, $5 for children. Adveritising and t-shirt costs were discussed. Last year we ordered too many t-shirts. Adjournment. The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Barbara Fawcett
