Friendswood Bicycle Advisory Committee
March 28. 1996
1. Call to Order. The Bicycle Advisory committee met on the above date at
7:15 p.m. In attendance were Sherie Warminski, Mel Measles, Barb Fawcett,
Joe Tennison, Sandy McHone and Todd Yeager. Jay Haldiman, Sidney
Allbritton, and Don Beeth attended as visitors and interested citizens.
2. Report from Chair. Sherie suggested that we request that the city issue a
proclamation for bicycle week in May.
3. Texas Bicycle Coalition (TBC).Meeting. Mel attended the recent TBC
meeting and reported that TBC is trying to keep the Interstate Transportation Act
grant program going. The TBC is encouraging bicyclists to join as new
rrierribers acid their mission is to lobby on behalf of bicyclists when new
legislation might affect them. Mel will check into the possibility of our corfirnittee
joining as a group and the city paying the $20.00 membership fee.
4. Sunset Bicycle Lanes. Sherie and Mel reported that construction on bike
lanes will begin in early April. The bid to complete lanes with stripes and
signage from FM528 to the creek was $34,000 which may leave enough money
from the arnount budgeted to complete bike lanes for the remaining portion of
Sunset up to FM2351. The committee agreed that a press release should be
placed in the local papers when construction begins.
Sherie raised a concern about automobile traffic driving in the bike lanes and
suggested raised bumps along the bike lane might deter cars more effectively
than stripes. After some discussion, the committee felt that we should hold off
on bumps until we see if there are problems with automobile traffic crossing into
the bike lanes.
5. New Committe Members. Joe made a motion to add 3 new members to the
committee and Barbara seconded the motion. The motion passed and the
names of Jay Haldiman, Sidney Allbritton, and Don Beeth will be recommended
'to City Council for membership to the Bicycle Advisory Committee to replace
T ony LeCara and Bruce Cunningham. Sandi McHone requested to be made
an alternate member.
6. Ticket to Ride program. There was discussion regarding sponsors for
giveaway items to be handed out with the tickets for safe bicycling. Joe will get
a list of management contacts for fast food restaurants in town and Sherie
volunteered to call them about sponsoring the program. Jay said that he would
contact the manager at McDonald's about sponsorship.
7. 4th of July Bike Ride. Barbara moved to have the bike ride on the morning
of June 29, 1996. The motion was seconded and passed. Mel offered to
handle registration and the breakpoints for the ride. He will talk to Jimmy
Holland about police support along the route. Sandi will consider possible
routes and give us some options to look at. Joe will work up a design for the t-
shirts.
Adjournment. The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara Fawcett
