HomeMy WebLinkAboutBicycle Committee Minutes 1996-08-29 RegularFriendswood Bicycle Advisory Committee August 29. 1996 1. Call to Order. The Bicycle Advisory committee met on the above date at 7:10 p.m. In attendance were Mel Measles, Barb Fawcett, Jay Haldiman, Sandi McHone, Todd Yeager and Sidney Allbritton. Choice Kinchen also attended the meeting. 2. The minutes from the May 23rd, June 4th, June 27th and July 25th meetings were read and approved. 3. Report from Chair. Sidney served as acting Chairman in Sherie's absence. He said Sherie was concerned about debris in the bike lanes and asked that the committee consider ideas on getting the lanes cleaned up. Sidney suggested a study on the cost of cleanup and possible fundraisers. Mel brought up an idea for a "Sweep -a -thou" - raising money from pledges for cleaning portions of bike lanes on Sunset or other streets. He also suggested asking City Council to match any pledges received from the fundraiser. Mel; Barbara, and Choice will form a committee to look at the cost of street cleaning and options for fundraising to cover the cost. Barbara will check prices of private street sweeping companies. Mel offered to check with City Council to see if we can contact the Department of Transportation (DOT) regarding more frequent cleaning of FM528 and FM518. Sidney asked the committee to schedule a date when we could meet with bike riders in the community to see if there is any interest in group bike rides. After some discussion, Mel moved that we invite the public to a meeting on September 26, 1996 at 7:30 pm immediately following our regular 7:00 pm committee meeting. Jay seconded the motion and it passed. Sidney and Sherie will do press releases and send mailouts to riders from the June bike ride. Todd will check on the availability of the City Council room. 4. "Bicycle Friendly" designation. Todd has been trying to get in contact with the League of American Bicyclists to get a sample of a resolution which is required in the submittal request for "Bicycle Friendly" designation. He'll keep trying to contact them so that the resolution for Council can be finalized. 5. June 29th bike ride. Jay said that the bike route had lots of turns which weren't too well marked at some points. It was easy to get lost. Next year's route should be marked better or manned with more helpers to assist riders. 6. Centennial Sports Park Master Plan. Todd indicated that the plan wasn't finalized yet for the Centennial Sports Park and that the latest versions had more variety of fields/courts that the previous design. Sidney asked the committee what facilities the committee would like to see for bicyclists in the new park. Discussion followed and it was suggested that we survey the public (bike riders from previous rides) and provide bicyclists' input for the Parks Department. Todd suggested asking Jon Branson to the September 26 meeting to present the latest plan. We could follow-up with survey of attendees and other bike riders. Adjournment. The meeting was adjourned at 8:25 pm. Respectfully submitted, Barbara Fawcett
