HomeMy WebLinkAboutFourth of July Steering Committee Minutes 1985-07-21 4TH OF JULY, 1986 STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING ,7/21/85 A meeting of the 4th of July, 1986 Steering Committee was held on July 17, 1985 at 7: 00 p.m. at the Public Works Building. The following members were present: Phyllis Lee Donna Cashion Lynn Chatham Chuck Talbot Marge Ulsh Choice Kinchen Janet Sobey Veronica Scoulious Charles Jordan Benny Baker Phyllis Lee explained the organizational structure of the committee by stating that City Council appointed her Chairman of the Commmittee. Lynn Chatham will coordinate the area volunteer organizations for participation in the celebration and Donna Cashion is the staff rep- resentative. At the next committee meeting subcommittees will be formed with a committee head. THEME - Suggestions included: America - 210 years Texas - 150 years Friendswood- 91 years HISTORY IN THE NUMBERS America, Texas Friendswood - A glorious past; A bright future. America, Texas, Friendswood - Traditions America, Texas, Friendswo.od - History in the making The committee will consider themes for the Fourth and make a final decision at the next meeting. BANDS - Marge Ulsh previously contacted the Air Force and Army Bands. A follow-up letter will be sent by August 2, 1985. Food and transportation might be required by the City. Kyle Shaw .(_334-4242) needs to be contacted regarding the Coast Guard Honor Guard as well as the Drum and Bugle Corp at Dobie High 'School and any Summer Band Camps for partici- pation in the parade. DISCUSSION - Veronica Scoulious volunteered to contact various or- ganizations for parade entries. Janet Sobey contacted the r Golden Knights Parachute Team. Food and transportation may be required for their participation. STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING P. 2 Anne Talbot will be the 4th of July Historian. Alternate plans in case of rain were discussed but it was felt that having a rain date would not be effective. Since it rained only twice on the 4th of July in the past 15 or 20 years it was decided to have the celebration on the Fourth with no rain date predetermined. Fourth of. July letterhead will be ordered after the theme has be selected. The address of the Fourth of July Committee is P.O. Box 00 Friendswood, Tx. 77546. There were requests .from "strolling" commercial vendors to sell items along the parade route. After a brief discussion the committee decided to keep the "down home" flavor to Friends- wood's .parade by directing the vendors to "stroll" in Steven- son Park. The planting of the birm in Stevenson Park is a Sesquicentennial project and will be handled by the Sesquicentennial Coordinating Committee. I Charles Jordan requested a copy of the 1985 4th of July ex- penditures, brochure and an overview by time-line. The next meeting of the 4th of July Steering Committee will be Wednesday, August 21, 1985,. 7 : OO p.m. at the Public Works Building.
