HomeMy WebLinkAboutBicycle Committee Minutes 1992-02-27 Regular i Friendswood Bicycling Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes Page 2/27/92 The first meeting of the Friendswood Bicycle Advisory Committee was called to order by City Councilmember Mel Measeles at 7 : 00 P.M. in the City Council Chambers of Friendswood City Hall, 109 Willowick. The following members and guest were present. Members: Richard Prentice Melinda Wasson Tony LeCara Joe Tennison Janie Honeycutt Mel Measeles Staff: Todd Yeager Guest: Debbie Yeager John Gaynor Committee member Jan Jordan was unable to .attend. The first order of business was for everyone to introduce themselves to the committee and tell what they would like to see the committee accomplish. Some of the items were as follows: 1 . More bike lanes within the city, especially on thoroughfares. 2. Paved bike lanes on Sunset and FM 518 3. Sidewalks on FM 518 (downtown area) 4. Safer cross-walks (controlled) 5. More exposure of committee to citizens a. Newspaper articles b. Sponsor bicycle ride in 4th of July parade c. Work with the Friendswood Midnight Bike Ramble d. Members attend organized rides e. Work with the Chamber of Commerce f. Work with the schools 6 . Develop a Master Bicycle Plan for the city a. Develop map of bike paths in city. 1 i b. Committee ride bikes within city so as to get a better ideal of conditions. 7. Address funding of Master Plan. 8 . Encourage wider shoulders on new construction of streets and highways . 9. Installation of bike-safe drainage grates within city 10. Develop a Bicycle Safety Program for the citizens 11 . Contact the schools for possible safety and awareness programs 12. City needs a street sweeper to keep the debris and trash off streets. Mr. John Gaynor, Regional #12 Bicycle Coordinator for the Texas Department of Transportation addressed the committee as to the progress of bicycle awareness at the state level. The following items were discussed. 1 . All regions of the -DOT now have Regional Bicycle Coordinators. 2. All states must now have Bicycle Coordinators 3. DOT funds are presently limited to Educational and Safety Programs. 4. DOT is in the transition stage and new policies for cyclist are being developed. 5. Suggested that the committee contact the following groups for further cycling programs; a. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Mrs. Kathryn Nichols Outdoor Recreation Planner (512) 389-4735 (ask about the "Sims Trail Act") b. Harris/Galveston Area Council possible grant money for bike trails The committee agreed to meet on the forth Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at Friendswood City Hall, 109 Willowick. Mr. Tony LeCara agreed to serve as the Chairperson. Mr. Richard Prentice agreed to serve 'as the Vice Chairperson. No one volunteered for the job as Secretary. Future .meeting will be tape recorded and minutes will be extracted from the tapes. Draft copies of the Friendswood Bicycling Advisory Committee, By-Laws were distributed to the members for their review.
