MR. STEVE WALDNER WITH UNITED WAY APPEARED BEFORE COUNCIL TO PRESENT A BRIEF
OVERVIEW OF' SOME OF THE 49 VARIOUS PROGR.AMS THAT UNITED WAY SUPPORTS SUCH AS
NON-EMERGENCY TRANSPORTATION IN THE BAY AREA, FOR SENIOR CITIZENS AND KIDNEY
AND CANCER PATIENTS, BIRTH TO 3 YEARS FOR CEREBRAL PALSY, MH/MRR FOR
MENTALL'Y RETARDED ADULTS, BIG BROTHERS/BIG SISTERS, BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED
WATERS, ALCOHOL/RAPE, CHICANO CENTER CRISIS AND TEEN HOT LINE, CROSSROADS
FOR CHILDREN IN THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM, DELPECHIN CHILDREN CENTER FOR ADOPT,
SENIOR DAY CARE CENTER, VOLUNTEER CENTER FOR THE UNITED WAY HELP-LINE.
MAYOR NEWMAN THANKED MR. WALDNER FOR HIS PRESENTATION WITH COUNCILMEMBER
LOWE ASKING HOW TO GET THIS INFORMATION INTO THE SCHOOL SYSTEMS.
CITY MANAGER COX REPORTED ON THE TEXAS COALITION OF CTTIES ON FRANCHISED
UTILITY ISSUES (TCCFUI) MEETING THAT WILL BE HELD ON JULY 19 IN AUSTIN. AS
CHAIR OF THE ELECTRIC COMMITTEE, MR. COX STATED, HE HAS COORDINATED A
MEETTNG OF SEVERF�L PUC, CITY AND PRIVATE REPRESENTATIVES TO DISCUSS UPCOMING
ISSUES OF TMPORTANCE TO CITIES REGARDING EL�CTRIC COMPANIES AND THAT
CURRENTLY ABOUT 150 CITIES HAVE JOINED THE STATEWIDE COALITION. MR. COX
FURTHER STATED THAT ON �3EHALF OF OF TCCFUI, HE IS PROVIDING TESTIMONY TO THE
HOUSE COMMTTTEE ON STATE AFFAIRS SUBCOMMITTLE ON SB 373 OVERSIGHT AND THAT
SLTBCOMMITTEE IS I�OOKING AT RETAIL WHEELING AND OTHER ELECTRIC UTILITY ISSUES
TO COME BEFORE THE LEGISLATURE IN 1997. MR. COX ALSO REPORTED THAT BY THE
''- . TIME COUNCTL MEET5, THE GULF COAST COALITION OF CITIES (GCCC) WILL HAVE MET
WITH REPRESENTAT7CVE5 OF TEXAS-NEW MEXICO POWER AND OTHER TEXAS CITIES WITH
TNP SERVICE REGARDING THE PROPOSAL OF THE COMPANY FOR "COMMUNITY CHOICE."
MR. COX REPORTED THAT DOUG KNEUPPER MET WITH DAVID MURPHY, HL&P, REGARDING
STREETLIGHT INSTALLATIONS IN FRIEND5WOOD AND THAT MR. MURPHY STATED ABOUT 25
CONCRETE POLES HAVE BEEN ORDERED TO PLACE STREETLIGHTS ON BLACKHAWK
BOULEVARD. MR. COX REPORTED THAT MEB CONSTRUCTION HAS BEGIN WORK IN RANCHO
VIEJO SUBDIVISION ON THE SEWER SYSTEM FaR THAT AREA. THEY ARE EXPECTED TO
COMPLETE ALL WORK IN APPROXIMATELY 100 WORKTNG DAY5. WESLEY WEST INTERESTS
IS PROCEEDING AS A PARTNER IN THIS ENDEAVOR. MR. COX ALSO THANKED ALL OF
THE SPONSORS OF THE GATHERING FOR ANOTHER FINE EVENT.
MR. COX REPORTED THE CHARTER REVIEW COMMISSTON IS MOVING FORWARD, WILL CALL
A PUBLIC HEARING AND BE READY TO TO GTVE THEIR FIRST REPORT TO COUNCIL
AUGUST 19TH.
