HomeMy WebLinkAboutSCAC Minutes 2025-03-10 RegularMINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY COMMITTEE MARCH 10, 2025 (DRAFT) THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY COMMITTEE MET IN A REGULAR MEETING ON MONDAY, MARCH 10, 2025, 10:00 AM, IN THE ACTIVITY ROOM, LOCATED IN THE FRIENDSWOOD ACTIVITY BUILDING, 416 MORNINGSIDE DRIVE, FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS, WITH THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS PRESENT CONSTITUTING A QUORUM: VICKIE HEFNER COMMITTEE CHAIR DAVID O’BRIEN COMMITTEE VICE-CHAIR MARTHA COTTON COMMITTEE MEMBER MICHEAL CULP COMMITTEE MEMBER DOROTHY MONTZ COMMITTEE MEMBER DORIS OCHOA COMMITTEE MEMBER ROSIE OLIVO COMMITTEE MEMBER CAROL TOMLINSON COMMITTEE MEMBER ETHEL ZANSLER COMMITTEE MEMBER 1. CALL TO ORDER Committee Chair Vickie Hefner called the meeting to order, with a quorum present at 10:04 A.M. 2. INVOCATION The invocation was led by Committee Member Martha Cotton. 3. COUNCIL LIAISON AND COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMENTS A. Receive comments from City Council Liaison. Council Liaison Robert J. Griffon reported the City Council approved the Parks and Recreation 5-year master plan. Committee members discussed pros and cons on locating a recreation center on Lundy Lane. B. Receive comments from Committee Members. None. 4. PUBLIC COMMENT Council Liaison Robert J. Griffon introduced Tom Hinckley who currently serves as the Chairman on the City of Friendswood’s Planning and Zoning Commission. Mr. Hinkley is running for City Council Position 6 and he shared information with the committee members about his family and volunteering efforts. Committee Chair Vickie Hefner asked if there is some way to offer pick-up and drop-off bus service on special event days. Currently, the bus service is not offered on days when only a special event is scheduled. Several committee members have provided transportation to a few individuals for past special events. Assistant Director Michael Boyett agreed to discuss the possibility. Committee Member Martha Cotton asked if it were possible to host Pearland Knapp Center more often to practice chair volleyball so our Friendswood participants could improve their game. There was discussion on different ways to host the tournament. Committee Chair Vickie Hefner suggested the tournaments be scheduled at a different time other than the weekly regularly scheduled free-play time. 5. MINUTES A. Consider approving the minutes of the Senior Citizen Advisory Committee held on Monday, February 10, 2025. Senior Citizen Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes Monday, March 10, 2025 Page 2 of 3 A motion was made by Committee Member Martha Cotton and seconded by Committee Member Dorothy Montz to approve the minutes. The vote was the following: Ayes: Committee Chair Vickie Hefner, Committee Vice-Chair David O’Brien, Committee Member Martha Cotton, Committee Member Micheal Culp, Committee Member Dorothy Montz, Committee Member Doris Ochoa, Committee Member Rosie Olivo, Committee Member Carol Tomlinson, and Committee Member Ethel Zansler. Nays: None. The item passed unanimously. 6. BUSINESS ITEMS A. Discuss and take possible action regarding upcoming trips and events. Assistant Senior Program Manager Kim Zrubek discussed the dates, times, locations, and costs of trips and events in March. B. Discuss and take possible action regarding the Spring Picnic at Stevenson Park. Senior Program Manager Shadey Caraveo-Saldaña stated that the Spring Picnic is scheduled for Thursday, April 10. Jeter is sponsoring the event, Sonic will provide the buns and condiments, VFW Post 5619 will provide and cook the franks. Village On The Park will provide treat bags. Activities will include Bingo, Easter egg hunt, cornhole, and geocaching. 7. REPORTS A. Receive the Assistant Director’s Report regarding upcoming community events and park improvements. Assistant Director Michael Boyett reported the Spring Sparkle event is on April 12, 2025 from 8:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. at the Centennial Park. The event will provide electronic recycling and shredding from 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. or until the trucks are full. Clean-up items accepted are grass clippings, old appliances, old furniture, tree limbs, and unwanted wood, metal, and plastic. They are also hosting a garage sale during the event. B. Receive a report regarding the Valentine’s Day Luncheon. Senior Program Manager Shadey Caraveo-Saldaña reported there was a smaller attendance, but the people appeared to enjoy the food and the game show. For next year we plan to change the games to get more people involved. C. Receive a report regarding the Go Texan Luncheon. Senior Program Manager Shadey Caraveo-Saldaña reported the event was well attended with 123 sign-ins. She received good comments on the food and the live music. D. Receive a report regarding the Mardi Gras Celebration. Senior Program Manager Shadey Caraveo-Saldaña reported the attendees enjoyed the event. The food was little spicey for some. Committee Chair Vickie Hefner suggested for next year to offer both spicey and non- spicey gumbo options. There was discussion for next year’s plan to schedule the Mardi Gras Celebration event in January and Go Texan Day Luncheon in March in order to space out the events. ADJOURNMENT A motion was made by Committee Member Carol Tomlinson and Committee Member Rosie Olivo to adjourn the meeting at 10:49 A.M. The vote was the following: Ayes: Committee Chair Vickie Hefner, Committee Vice-Chair David O’Brien, Committee Member Martha Cotton, Committee Member Micheal Culp, Committee Member Dorothy Montz, Committee Member Doris Ochoa, Committee Member Rosie Olivo, Committee Member Carol Tomlinson, and Committee Member Ethel Zansler. Nays: None. The item passed unanimously.
