HomeMy WebLinkAboutSCAC Minutes 2025-04-14 RegularMINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY COMMITTEE APRIL 14, 2025 (DRAFT) THE CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD SENIOR CITIZEN ADVISORY COMMITTEE MET IN A REGULAR MEETING ON MONDAY, APRIL 14, 2025, 10:00 AM, IN THE ACTIVITY ROOM, LOCATED IN THE FRIENDSWOOD ACTIVITY BUILDING, 416 MORNINGSIDE DRIVE, FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS, WITH THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS PRESENT CONSTITUTING A QUORUM: VICKIE HEFNER COMMITTEE CHAIR MARTHA COTTON COMMITTEE MEMBER DORIS OCHOA COMMITTEE MEMBER ROSIE OLIVO COMMITTEE MEMBER CAROL TOMLINSON COMMITTEE MEMBER 1. CALL TO ORDER Committee Chair Vickie Hefner called the meeting to order, without a quorum present at 10:07 A.M. Committee Vice-Chair David O’Brien, Committee Member Micheal Culp, Committee Member Dorothy Montz, and Committee Member Ethel Zansler were absent. The meeting gained a quorum with the arrival of Committee Member Martha Cotton at 10:17 A.M. 2. INVOCATION The invocation was led by Committee Member Doris Ochoa. 3. COUNCIL LIAISON AND COMMITTEE MEMBER COMMENTS A. Receive comments from City Council Liaison. Council Liaison Robert J. Griffon reported that he is sponsoring and has scheduled the mariachi band for the Cinco de Mayo event at the Activity Building. There were not any City Council items related to the Senior Citizen Program to report. B. Receive comments from Committee Members. Assistant Director Michael Boyett mentioned there have been several incidents of seniors making mean spirited comments to other seniors. If committee members hear any negative conversations, please report the occurrence to staff. Staff will address the occurrences one-on-one. The last resort is to take disciplinary action to suspend access to the program. 4. PUBLIC COMMENT None. 5. MINUTES A. Consider approving the minutes of the Senior Citizen Advisory Committee held on Monday, March 10, 2025. A motion was made by Committee Member Doris Ochoa and seconded by Committee Member Carol Tomlinson to approve the minutes. The vote was the following: Ayes: Committee Chair Vickie Hefner, Committee Member Martha Cotton, Committee Member Doris Ochoa, Committee Member Rosie Olivo, and Committee Member Carol Tomlinson. Discuss and take possible action regarding upcoming trips and events. Assistant Senior Program Manager Kim Zrubek discussed the dates, times, locations, and costs of trips and events in May. B. Discuss and take possible action regarding the Cinco de Mayo event. Senior Program Manager Shadey Caraveo-Saldaña stated the Cinco de Mayo event is scheduled for Monday, May 5 from 11:00 A.M to 1:00 P.M at the Activity Building. There will not be any other daily activities or programs on that day at the Activity Building. La Casita will not be furnishing the food this year because the restaurant is closed on Mondays. Shadey will purchase the enchiladas, rice, beans, and frescas from Habaneros Tex-Mex. There will be a live mariachi music courtesy of Council Liaison Robert J. Griffon. C. Discuss and take possible action regarding the Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea. Senior Program Manager Shadey Caraveo-Saldaña stated the Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13 from 1:00 P.M to 3:00 P.M at the Activity Building. There will not be any other daily activities or programs in the Main Room after 11:00 A.M. The food will include tea, light sandwiches and salads. Shadey asked Committee Member Vickie Hefner if she would consider providing home grown cucumbers for the sandwiches and Committee Member Carol Tomlinson if she would prepare her pasta salad. Ladies will be encouraged to dress comfortably to be pampered. The event will include four stations for attendees to browse: sugar scrub, shoulder massage, dry needling demonstration by EvaluatePT, and hydrafacial demonstration Vitality Clinic. Each attendee will receive a gift bag that includes body spray donated by Bath and Body Works and a flower donated by Roy Wilks, Medicare agent. 7. REPORTS A. Receive the Assistant Director’s Report regarding upcoming community events and park improvements. Assistant Director Michael Boyett reported the department would like to add a second kayak launch. They met with Rotary and the Drainage District recently to discuss details. He reported that last Saturday’s Spring Sparkle event was successful. Concert in the Park begins Friday, May 2 at 7:00 P.M at the Stevenson Park Gazebo. The Youth Fishing Derby is Saturday, May 3 from 8:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M at the Centennial Park Pond. B. Receive a report regarding the Spaghetti Luncheon Fundraiser. Senior Program Manager Shadey Caraveo-Saldaña reported that the fundraiser ran well and collected $2,500 in sales. Since the event requires lots of resources and discounted food, Shadey asked the committee for feedback on either raising the ticket price or changing the Mardi Gras event into a fundraiser for next year. After some discussion, the group preferred for next year to raise the ticket price and continue with the Spaghetti meal for the fundraiser. C. Receive a report regarding the Spring Picnic at Stevenson Park. Senior Program Manager Shadey Caraveo-Saldaña reported that the picnic was very well attended with 130 hot dogs eaten. Thank you to the VFW 5619 for cooking the hot dogs and furnishing heated chili, cheese, onions, condiments and the buns. The VFW would like to continue providing this service and agreed to cook the hamburgers at the Fall picnic. 8. The vote was the following: Ayes: Committee Chair Vickie Hefner, Committee Member Martha Cotton, Committee Member Doris Ochoa, Committee Member Rosie Olivo, and Committee Member Carol Tomlinson. Nays: None. The item passed unanimously.
