HomeMy WebLinkAboutCC Minutes 1969-11-12 Special �� � r� � :'� � �����-��n�����.i, i��-� �1�� � MINUTES OF A SPECIAL CALL MEETING OF THE FRIENDSWOOD CITY COUNCIL November 12, 1969 A Special Called Meeting of the Friendswood City Council was held in the Council Chamber at 8:30 A.M, on November 12, with the following members present: Ralph W. Somers Mayor Edward F. Stuart Councilman Thomas Woods Councilman Ronald Hamil Councilman Absent from the meeting were Councilmen George Prude and James Mager. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss submission of a bid to the Friendswood School Board for a ten-acre tract of land to be used as a park site. With a quorum present, business was transacted as follows: CALL TO ORDER Mayor Somers,, in stating the business for the day, announced that this meeting was being held at this time to coincide with Youth Appreciation Week. He explained that the Senior Class of Friendswood High School had elected members to serve as City officials, both elected and appointed, for this one d�y at City Hall . SWEARING-IN OF OFFICIALS-FOR--A-DAY• The roster of officers was presented to the Mayor and, en masse, they took the Oath of Office administered by Mayor Somers. Thereafter, each student officer took his or her place beside the officer he represented, and in this manner the meeting proceeded. Officers sworn in were as follows: David Murray Terrell Brown Richard Childers Don Reed Becky Murrell Becky Chalfont Denny Lanmon Cecil Brown Freddie .Griggs Jim Beers Stephanie Collova DeWayne Smith Donna Lanning Richard Stapp Sally Statz Nancy Barnes Gordon Kraft Hooter Weaver Terri Guttrich ACQUISITION OF PARK LAND Mayor Councilman Councilman Councilman Councilman Councilman Planning Commission Chairman Planning Commission Planning Commission Planning Commission Planning Commission Police Chief Parks & Recreation Director Fire Marshal City Secretary Tax Collector Corporation Court Judge Civil Defense Director City Inspector `� A communication from the Park Land Committee, Councilmen James E, Mager and Ronald G. Hamil , was presented as follows: The Park Land Committee recommends that the City of Friendswood submit a bid of $20,000.00 to the Friendswood Independent School District for the purchase of 10.00 acres described in the attached papers . The committee fua�ther recommends that application for Federal or State Aid for the purchase of thss land be made as soon as possible if the City should become the successful bidder on this property. ��.�- -- - _ _ _ _ It was noted that bidding on this land would close on December 9, at 5 p.m. In answer to a question from the Council , School Superintendent Ward stated that �n the event the City were the successful bidder, he felt that payment could be delayed not later than August 31 , 1970, which is the fiscal year's end for the School District. Councilman Hamil made a motion that the City Council submit a bid for a;, the ten acres described in the legal document, the money to be turned 1�`�� ��` over to the School Board not later than August 1 . Councilman Stuart seconded the motion, and it carried unanimously. ANNOUfVCEMENT: Mayor Somers announced a meeting at the High School Auditorium on Monday night, November 17, at 7:30 p.m, at which Judge Holbrook and Commission�r Lawrence would discuss the upcoming Road and Bridge Bond Election, HORSE ARENA• Mrs. Hensley was present and presented to Council a diagram of the proposed horse arena and adjacent appurtenances, and gave a brief explanation of the plans for the benefit of the students present. YOUTH APPRECIATION WEEK SPONSORS Mr. Bill Cornelius of the Optimists Club, sponsor of the Youth Appreciation Week, was introduced by the Mayor. Mr. Cornelius then presented each of the Student Officials with a certificate commemorat- ing their part in the week's activities. Councilman Hamil made a motion that the meeting adjourn.
