4. DISCUSSION ITEMS
A Discuss the Community and Economic Development Committee economic development
and business retention strategy.
The committee reviewed draft messages provided by Rhea with all the input received from the
visits committee members had with business owners and brainstormed to produce common
phrases and action words to take to the Collaborative group. Much thought and intent went
into crafting the messages to reach intended audience(s) effectively.
The committee discussed the next steps, which include bringing the collaborative group
together again followed by a workshop with City Council. The annual report for CEDC will be
given to City Council in September. Contact with the people who were interviewed and
providing them with results and feedback is also a goal.
Other initiatives from the Strategic Plan that could begin is to "Bring relevant and diverse
businesses to Friendswood." Next month, begin updating the Target Market List (2002). This
would include input from brokers and review of the Permitted Use Table and North American
Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes. Kyle and Judy volunteered to assist with this
initiative.
Asimakis also informed the Committee that a Parking Ad Hoc Committee has been formed to
review parking requirements throughout the city and in the Downtown District (small lots). The
committee is made up of the following people: Susan Asimakis (CEDC), Tom Hinckley and
Marcus Rives (P&Z), Brett Banfield (FDFA), Ron Cox and Rebecca Hillenburg (FDEDC), David
Stanley (DD business owner and resident), and Sally Branson (Council). Input received from
business owners during recent interviews might be useful. The committee intends to review
parking requirements and explore other options and make a recommendation or report their
findings to the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council.
