HomeMy WebLinkAboutCentennial Committee Minutes 1995-02-07 Regular STATE OF TEXAS ) CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD ) COUNTY OF GALVESTON/HARRIS )( MINUTES OF THE CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY COMMITTEE MEETING THAT WAS HELD ON rt TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1995 AT 5:30 P.M. AT UNIPLEX OFFICE PARK, 1414 S. FRIENDSWOOD DRIVE, FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS, WITH THE FOLLOWING PRESENT CONSTITUTING A QUORUM: CO-CHAIRMAN PHYLLIS LEE CO-CHAIRMAN JANIS LOWE MEMBERS ED HARRIS KITTEN HAJECATE MARY ELLEN BELLARD HUBERTA MORA PATSY RAUCH ANN WOOD LEO BRAUN ADVISORY MEMBER JOYCE BAKER ABSENT FROM THE MEETING WAS LAURIE WHITEHEAD, JERRY SMITH AND CHARLES KIRKLIN. STAFF MEMBER DELORIS MCKENZIE WAS ALSO ABSENT. THE READING OF THE MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING WAS POSTPONED UNTIL THE MARCH MEETING DUE TO THE ABSENSE OF DELORIS MCKENSIE. MARY ELLEN WAS APPOINTED TO TAKE THE MEETING MINUTES. CO-CHAIRMAN LEE CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER. THE FINANCIAL REPORT WAS REVIEWED. A COPY OF THE FINANCIAL REPORT IS ATTACHED. THE HISTORY BOOKS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN PICKED UP AT THE CHAMBER WERE HANDED TO MEMBERS WHO VOLUNTEERED TO HAND-DELIVER THESE BOOKS TO THOSE PURCHASERS WHO, ALTHOUGH CONTACTED DID NOT PICK UP THEIR BOOKS. THE REMAINDER WILL BE MAILED. THERE ARE 256 BOOKS LEFT TO SELL. PHYLLIS LEE REPORTED THAT IN A CONVERSATION WITH JOHN BRANSON OF THE CITY PARKS BOARD HE CONCURRED THAT THE CENTENNIAL COMMITTEE WAS ON TRACK WITH THE BUDGETED PROPOSED CITY HALL CLOCK. THE COMMITTEE HAS BEEN ASKED BY MAYOR NEWMAN TO GATHER COST ESTIMATES OF A CORNERSTONE FOR THE CITY HALL BUILDING. LEO BRAUN VOLUNTEERED ALONG WITH THE HELP OF KITTEN HAJECATE TO UNDERTAKE THAT PROJECT. THE POSSIBILITY OF A CAPSULE TO BE ENCASED IN THE CORNERSTONE WAS CONSIDERED. THE PROPOSED CITY HALL FOUNTAIN WITH HENCEFORTH BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CITY PARKS BOARD. THE ARCHITECT'S DRAWING OF A FOUNTAIN TO BE INSTALLED IN FRONT OF THE CITY HALL BUILDING HAS BEEN SCRAPPED AND A SCALED-DOWN RENDITION OF A FOUNTAIN WILL BE PURSUED. CO-CHAIRMAN JANIS LOWE PRESENTED THE BLUEPRINTS OF STEVENSON PARK DEPICTING THE PROPOSED ADDITIONS WHICH INCLUDE A"WALK OF THE CENTURY"PATH FROM THE CITY HALL TO THE GAZEBO WITH TURN OF THE CENTURY LAMPS TO LIGHT A WALKWAY WITH ENGRAVED PAVERS CONTAINING THE NAMES OF FRIENDSWOOD FAMILIES AND THE DATES THEY MOVED TO FRIENDSWOOD. THE COMMITTEE HAS BEEN ASKED TO UNDERTAKE THE SALE OF THESE PAVERS AT A PROPOSED COST OF $25.00 PRESALE PER PAVER . THE BID FOR THE WORK HAS NOT BEEN REWARDED AS OF THIS DATE LINDA YEAGER HAS OFFERED HER SERVICES TO PROMOTE THE PROJECT. **PATSY RAUCH MOVED TO APPROVE THE UNDERTAKING OF THE SALE OF THE PAVERS TO DECORATE THE WALK OF THE CENTURY BETWEEN CITY HALL AND THE GAZEBO IN STEVENSON PARK. SECONDED BY KITTEN HAJEKATE. MOTION APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY. ED HARRIS HAS AGREED TO SET UP THE CENTENNIAL BOOTH AT THE 4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION AT STEVENSON PARK. SALE OF CENTENNIAL PARAPHERNALIA WILL BE THE FOCUS OF THE BOOTH. THE CENTENNIAL PINS HAVE BEEN SOLD WITH ONLY A VERY FEW REMAINING. DISCUSSION WAS HELD REGARDING A REORDER OF 1000 PINS WITH THE IDEA OF GRATUITOUSLY GIVING EACH GRADUATING FRIENDSWOOD HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR A PIN WITH HIS/HER DIPLOMA. PHYLLIS LEE WILL INQUIRE HOW MUCH IT WILL COST TO ORDER 1000 ADDITIONAL PINS. **KTTTEN HAJECATE MOVED TO ORDER THE ADDITIONAL 1000 PINS. SECONDED BY JAMS LOWE. MOTION PASSED UNANIMOUSLY. THE BIRTHDAY OF FRIENDSWOOD ON JULY 16 HAS BEEN SUGGESTED FOR THE DEDICATION OF THE NEW CITY HALL. A RECEPTION TO BE HELD FROM 2:00 P.M. TO 5:00 P.M. WAS DISCUSSED TO BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CENTENNIAL COMMITTEE. MORE INFORMATION ON THIS PROJECT WILL BE FORTHCOMING. THE FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION LETTERS TO DIGNITARIES, HONOREES, AND PROMINENT LONG TIME FRIENDSWOOD FAMILIES WILL BE MAILED IN MARCH WITH THE PARKS DEPARTMENT PROVIDING THE LIST OF DIGNITARIES AND MARY ELLEN BELLARD AND HUBERTA MORA PROVIDING THE LIST OF FAMILIES AND HONOREES. THE BROWN HOUSE BED AND BREAKFAST WILL HOST THE BREAKFAST FOR DIGNITARIES AND HONOREES. LEE WINGATE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING PARADE CARS. THE FRIENDSWOOD HISTORICAL SOCIETY WILL HOST A CENTENNIAL LUNCHEON AND VINTAGE STYLE SHOW ON THURSDAY,APRIL 6,AT 11:30 A.M.AT THE FRIENDS CENTER OF THE FRIENDS CHURCH. TICKETS ARE $15.00 EACH. MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY WILL, AS IN THE PAST,BE ADMITTED FREE. A DISCUSSION WAS HELD ON PRESENTING A CENTENNIAL POSTER TO THE ELECTED OFFICIALS OF OUR DISTRICT. **HUBERTA MORA MOVED TO APPROVE THE DONATION OF A CENTENNIAL POSTER TO THE ELECTED OFFICIALS OF OUR DISTRICT. SECONDED BY ANN WOOD. MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. A VIDEO OF THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CRYSTAL BALL WAS VIEWED AS WELL AS A VIDEO OF THE AMERICAN TOWN OF THE YEAR AWARD. THE IDEA OF ENTERING FRIENDSWOOD IN THIS YEAR'S COMPETITION WAS DISCUSSED AND WAS FAVORABLY RECEIVED BY COMMITTEE MEMBERS. FURTHER STUDY OF THE PROJECT WILL BE FORTHCOMING.
