MINUTES
AUGUST 18, 1993
1. The meeting was called to order by the Co-Chairmen. Phyllis Lee chaired the meeting
and Janus Lowe recorded the minutes due to the absense of City Secretary Deloris
McKenzie.
Also present were Mary Ellen Bellard, Ann Wood, Joyce Baker, Huberta Mora.
Absent were Lila Ritter, Kitten Hajecate, and Laurie Whitehead
2. New members Carolyn Wright and Ed Harris, were welcomed by the other
committeemembers. Other new members Charles Kirkland and Patsy Rauch were not in
attendance. A brief history of the committee was given to the new members. A packet of
agendas and minutes will be prepared for them.
3. Due to McKenzie's absence, no financial report was given nor were minutes read.
5 New business:
1. The Committee wishes to secure designed vests bearing the centennial emblem to be
worn at future committee functions. It was also stated a nice 'golf shirt with the emblem
could be used. Each committee member will pay for their own uniform and may buy one
or both. Lee will see to the shirts from Crafty T's. Lowe will look into the vests.
2. A letter was received from the Friendswood Historical Society pledging their
support for a united effort with the Centennial Committee and the Parks Board for the
preservation of historical buildings of Friendswood and a place to locate the buildings for
the enjoyment and education of our citzens. It will be forwarded to the Parks Bd.
6. Old Business:
1. An update on the Kick Off ceremonies was given by Bellard and Mora.
A quote was received on the rental of a tent (Item A attached) and they will make
the final decision on the size. Also, they will locate chairs, tablecloths, and decorations.
The Committee feels strongly that the event should be as elegant as finanically possible in
order to give justice to our purpose.
*Dr. Alves has agreed for the use of her land for the ceremony.
*Lowe will see to the mowing of the property and stage set-up.
*Bellard will be responsible for the sanitation facilities and police department
coordination for security and crowd control.
*Mary Prihoda has volunteered for protocol and the stage agenda.
*The Frwd. Hist. Society will provide the food, ticket sales for the same,
advertising, tours, and some tables and chairs under the trees by the museum.
*Benny Baker will be in charge of sound.
*Wright is responsible for invitations to area organizations, churches, and special
officials. Invitations will be mailed by Oct 1st.
Kenton Harris of Motes Adversting Specialties addressed the committee. He requested
space at Heritage Day to show(no sales of) samples of promotional items imprinted with
the centennial logos and emblem. A conditional positive response was given. He must
bring all items to the Committee before the event for final approval. His request to show
these same items at the Chamber Trade Show was denied. The Committee feels they
should be saved for Heritage Day.
K. Harris also reported he could obtain silk-screened centennial flags, 3'x5',
in lots of 50 per order at a price of $32@ and in lots of 100 for $30@. The Committee
will seek to share this information.
A discussion was held concerning the Centennial poster which will be made available for
purchase at Heritage Day. It was motioned by Wood, seconded by Bellard to sell the
posters for$20. Wood and Baker are assigned to the man the sales table. Hajecate will
assist Laurie in the signings. Motion passed. Lee will try to secure a proper'carrying'
sleeve for the protection of the posters.
All committee members will be present before, during, and after the event to help in its
production.
2. The Book Report. Baker gave the report as per the attached Item B.
The Centennial painting will grace the cover of this coffee table size hardbound
book. The front inside cover will be the map of the city in 1895 and the back inside cover
will be a current aerial shot of the city. The book will be approx. 400 pages with 150
photos. There will be pen and ink drawings depicting each decade. The pages will be mat
enamel.
It was motioned by Lowe seconded by Mora that Baker is the designated agent for
the Commitee for all negotiations associated with the printing of the book. Motion passed.
It was motioned by Wright, seconded by Harris, this book be designated as the
official Centennial History Book. Motion passed.
After much discussion, it was motioned by Harris, seconded by Wright the
proceeds from sale of the book as proposed in Item B will be collected to pay off city seed
money first, royalies due Baker second, Centennial Com. third and the remaining proceeds
to the Frwd. Historical Society. Further this Committee will dissolve after the presentation
of its final report following the last day of December, 1995. All records and books will be
turned over to the Historical Society at that time. Motion passed
Lee will contact the City Attorney for the preparation of contractual agreement
with the writer and printer to the Committee.
7. The next meeting will be Tues. Sept. 21 at 7:00 p.m. at Uni-Plex.
8. The meeting adjourned at 9:10 p.m.
