HomeMy WebLinkAboutCentennial Committee Minutes 1993-02-16 Regular CENTENNIAL MEETING] CITY OF FRIENDSWOOD FEBRUARY 16 , 1993 MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY COMMITTEE MEETING THAT WAS HELD ON FEBRUARY 16 , 1993 AT 7 : 00 PM AT THE LIGHTHOUSE , 3502 FM 528 , FRIENDSWOOD , TEXAS WITH THE FOLLOWING PRESENT : PHYLLIS LEE JANIS LOWE JOYCE BAKER MARY ELLEN BELLARD KITTEN HAJECATE HUBERTA MORA LAURIE WHITEHEAD ANN WOOD DELORIS MCKENZIE , SECRETARY MEMBERS LILA RITTER , MARC FABER AND EX OFFICIO MEMBER CAROLYN WRIGHT WERE ABSENT FROM THE MEETING . PHYLLIS LEE CALLED THE MEETING TO ORDER AND DISCUSSED THE RESIGNATION OF EVELYN NEWMAN AS CHAIRPERSON AND THE APPOINTMENT BY MAYOR NEWMAN OF JANIS LOWE AND PHYLLIS LEE AS CO-CHAIRMEN . DISCUSSION WAS HELD REGARDING ADDING ADDITIONAL MEMBERS TO THE COMMITTEE WITH HUBERTA MORA RECOMMENDING FLOYD BROWN , JR . AND WILL CHECK TO SEE IF HE WILL SERVE . MINUTES OF NOVEMBER 17 , 1992 WERE APPROVED AS PRESENTED . MEMBER MARC FABER CAME IN AT THIS TIME AND RESIGNED FROM THE COMMITTEE DUE TO CONFLICTING MEETING DATES . LENGTHY DISCUSSION WAS HELD REGARDING PROGRAM OF WORK AND ESTABLISHING SUBCOMMITTEES FOR ( 1 ) DEDICATION ( 2 ) PRESERVATION AND ( 3 ) CELEBRATION . CO-CHAIRMEN LOWE AND LEE STATED THEY WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE STEERING COMMITTEE KEPT SMALL WITH SUBCOMMITTEE ' S FROM ORGANIZATIONS . DISCUSSION WAS HELD AS TO FESTIVITIES TO BE CONSIDERED FOR EACH SUBCOMMITTEE . THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS VOLUNTEERED TO WORK ON THE FOLLOWING SUBCOMMITTEES : DEDICATION - CAROLYN WRIGHT AND PHYLLIS LEE FISD - PLAN SOMETHING FOR EACH CAMPUS TREES - REDEDICATE LIBERTY TREE , ARBOR DAY , OAK AS OFFICIAL CITY SYMBOL , OUR TREASURED TREES CITY - ENTRANCE GATES , A MEMORIAL , ARENA PARK REVITALIZATION OR CREATE A NEW PARK PRESERVATION - MARY ELLEN BELLARD , JOYCE BAKER AND HUBERTA MORA PAINTING BOOK HISTORY/EDUCATION ( FISD/CLEARBROOK) RECEPTION FOR PAST MAYORS AND MEMBERS OF COUNCIL PROMISED LAND - COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROGRAM "I REMEMBER" NIGHTS - POSSIBLY DURING THE FINE ARTS FRIDAY NIGHT BAND CONCERTS HERITAGE DAY OR HERITAGE WEEK $1 . 00 NIGHT AT THE MOVIES CELEBRATION - JANIS LOWE , KITTEN HAJECATE , LAURIE WHITEHEAD & LILA RITTER LOGO WOMANLESS WEDDING CENTENNIAL BALL POSTER CONTEST FIRE DEPARTMENT OPEN HOUSE FAMILY OF THE YEAR COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING YULETIME CELEBRATION HOMECOMING ( ASK FLOYD BROWN, JR . ) PAGEANTS DISCUSSION WAS HELD REGARDING INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING GROUPS : DAUGHTERS OF THE REPUBLIC EASTERN STAR POLICE , FIRE , EMS SWIM TEAM LIONS CLUB HIGH SCHOOL DEPT . & CLUBS ROTARY WESTWOOD CARNIVAL COMM. SOROPTIMIST FINE ARTS COUNCIL PTO ' S OR PTA ' S - FISD/CLEARBROOK MASONS COMMUNITY EDUCATION HANGER SQUARES FISD/CCISD YOUTH SPORTS ASSOCIATION KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS PARKS BOARD BOY SCOUTS COMMUNITY APPEARANCE BOARD GIRL SCOUTS SENIORS ASSOCIATION 4TH OF JULY COMMITTEE - CHAIRMAN GARDEN CLUB CHURCHES MUSEUM CHAMBER OF COMMERCE DISCUSSION WAS HELD REGARDING BUDGET . STAFF REPORTED THERE IS $10 , 000 BUDGETED FOR THIS YEAR AND THAT $4 , 500 HAS BEEN ALLOCATED FROM THIS FUND FOR PAYMENT TO LAURIE WHITEHEAD FOR THE OFFICIAL SANCTIONED CENTENNIAL PAINTING. ANY FUNDS LEFT OVER IN THIS FISCAL YEAR WILL BE CARRIED OVER TO NEXT BUDGET YEAR . MR . CARL MURRAY MET WITH THE COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS THE DRAFT LOGO HE HAS PREPARED AS REQUESTED BY MAYOR NEWMAN . MR . MURRAY STATED HE HAS INCURRED APPROXIMATELY $200/250 DOLLARS FOR THE EARLY DESIGNS . COMMITTEE THANKED MR . MURRAY FOR HIS WORK . MR . MURRAY LEFT THE MEETING AT THIS TIME . COMMITTEE DISCUSSED THE COST FOR MR . MURRAY ' S WORK AND ASKED IF FUNDS WERE APPROVED FOR THIS PROJECT . SECRETARY DELORIS MCKENZIE ADVISED SHE WAS NOT AWARE OF A FUNDING AGREEMENT . COMMITTEE DISCUSSED WHAT TYPE OF LOGO THEY WOULD LIKE . AT THIS TIME THE COMMITTEE PREVIEWED LAURIE WHITEHEAD ' S OFFICIAL CENTENNIAL PAINTING WHICH INCLUDES A SEAL OR ' v LOGO . DISCUSSION FOLLOWED REGARDING USING THE LOGO FROM THE PAINTING . DISCUSSION WAS HELD REGARDING ESTIMATES FOR USING THE LOGO FOR STATIONARY , PINS AND ETC . **JANIS LOWE MOVED TO AUTHORIZE PHYLLIS LEE , JANIS LOWE AND HUBERTA MORA TO PERSONALLY DISCUSS WITH CARL MURRAY USING CERTAIN PORTIONS OF HIS LOGO AND THANK HIM FOR HIS EFFORTS IN CREATING THE OFFICIAL LOGO . SECONDED BY MARY ELLEN BELLARD . MOTION APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY . **KITTEN HAJECATE MOVED TO APPROVE USING THE LOGO FROM THE OFFICIAL SANCTIONED CENTENNIAL PAINTING FOR USE DURING THE CENTENNIAL YEAR . THE LOGO IS TO BE USED IN ITS ENTIRETY AND IN IT ' S ORIGINAL COLORS . SECONDED BY HUBERTA MORA . MOTION APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY . **LAURIE WHITEHEAD AUTHORIZED THE COMMITTEE TO PAY UP TO $300 . 00 TO CARL MURRAY FOR EXPENSES HE INCURRED DURING HIS EFFORTS IN CREATING THE OFFICIAL LOGO. SECONDED BY MARY ELLEN BELLARD . MOTION APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY . DISCUSSION WAS HELD TO HOLD THE NEXT MEETING ON MARCH 11 , AT UNIPLEX OFFICE COMPLEX . ME ING ADJOURNED AT 9 : 35 PM.
