HomeMy WebLinkAboutFourth of July Steering Committee Minutes 2011-06-15 4th of July Steering Committee June15, 2011 Minutes A regular meeting of the Fourth of July Steering Committee was held on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at City Hall, located at 910 S Friendswood Dr. Friendswood, TX 77546, at which time the following subject will be considered. The following members and staff were present at the meeting: Stacy Scarpa Skip Redding Chris Scarpa Gary Williams Drew Pennywell Tony Scarpa Tommy McDonald Heather McDonald Nicole Morgan Michelle Scarpa Dan Morgan Chair, Corey Kirkland Volunteer, Rachel Vargas Director of Community Services: James Toney Staff: Kimberly Ramirez Staff: Michael Boyett Staff: Gary Williams FISD Transportation: Mike Jones PD: Josh Rogers 1. Call to order: Meeting was called to order at 7:06p.m. 2. Communications from the public: NA 3. Discussion and possible action regarding May 18, 2011 minutes: 4. Discussion and possible action regarding the 2011, 4th of July celebration A. Dignitary Breakfast: Breakfast will be sponsored by the Goddard School and prepared by Skip Redding. Breakfast will be served to employees and committee members at 7am, breakfast for dignitaries will start at 8am. B. Parade: Dunn Bros will be open on the 4th of July but the drive thru will be closed; coffee shop will open at 6am. Dunn Bros will be offering free lemonade and ice tea; they will not open the drive thru until after the streets are open. Committee will call horse entries and try to have them drop off the horse trailers at Trinity Church or possibly co ntact Alton Todd to ask to use his property to avoid having the horses travel back to Captains Corner. Stacy Scarpa suggested adding horse entries to have a separate driver for the parade to take care of moving the horse trailer. Drew Pennywell stated that he sent a letter to the church representative to rsvp for the parade; Tony Scarpa will bring invitations to the Prayer Breakfast this Saturday, June 18th. Drew Pennywell stated that we have 5 grand marshals confirmed. James Toney stated that both entries will ride on a Deuce and a half, and staff and committee members will be decorate both parade entries. The committee was asked for volunteers to help with decorating city hall Friday afternoon and for the Grand Marshall, and Mayor and Council parade entries on Sunday afternoon. Robin Hall will be announcing the parade from a police card on their PA system. C. Day Program: Zydeco Dots have been confirmed to perform at the day program for $800. Party Animal and Stan the Train Man have also been confirmed for entertainment for the day program. Committee questioned if parking at Shadwell be closed for the event? Tommy and Nicole requested to have the parks crew drop of the barricades on the backside of the Chamber of Commerce, they will need 6 barricades, caution tape, and stairs to help Grand Marshalls, Mayor and Council off the parade vehicles. The question came up if we are going to let the Grand Marshal and M & C be dropped off at the Chamber of Commerce, would like to reserve spots right in front of the building. Should we put the stairs on a gator? James Toney and Drew will measure the truck to see what would be best way to accommodate the dignitaries from getting off the Deuce and ½. Committee suggested having the Bell brought into City Hall. Colleen Morgan will sing the National Anthem or Holly Harris for the Day program. Michelle Scarpa suggested having the youth dance group start at 12:30pm at the gazebo and have Zumba afterwards. Stacy Scarpa stated that their will be EMS bike teams in the park for the day program. James Toney questioned if we have an EMS station? Nicole Morgan requested to move extra tables in the park so patrons can have a place to sit while they eat. D. Evening program: Dan Morgan stated that Radiostar will be the evening band. Corey Kirkland questioned Josh Rogers on the Falcon Ridge traffic, and requested to have no parking signs on Lakes of Falcon Ridge. Tommy McDonald will be stationed at the Falcon Ridge gate. James Toney stated that Mayor and Council will be allowed to come in the Falcon Ridge entrance to the park and will be allowed to park at the junior high. James Toney stated that we will need a staff or committee member stationed at this location. Tommy McDonald stated that PD will have to take responsibility for one of the gates. Parking passes will need to be made for M & C, committee and staff members. James Toney stated that we will need barricades at the Falcon Ridge location, at the front of the school facing the parking lot. Tommy McDonald stated that we might see more engines in the park due to the drought. Tommy stated he will lay out the barricades on Sunday. Drew Pennywell questioned if their will be church service at the junior high? Good point will check on that. James Toney stated that we have discontinued 8” shells and this is our final year of our fireworks contract. James Toney stated that the fireworks have been confirmed with the Fire Marshall today. Dan Morgan questioned the status on Remax sky diving team, James Toney talked to Dana Tugal today and will talk to Al Saylor to see if they will cut us a deal. James Toney stated we may have an evening flyover which will be manned by Rick Carr, and might have a flyover for the parade as well. James Toney stated that the reader board has been confirmed with Interstate Barricades, we have 2 signs that are free of charge. Corey Kirkland stated that we do have generators that will be loaned to us and have standbys at Sunbelt if needed. Gary Williams, Parks Superintendent will be our electrician for the evening event. Dan Morgan asked when the band is coming in and J ames Toney stated it will be around 2pm. Troy Gunn with Backstage sound will be providing the sound for the event. Tommy McDonald questioned about the light towers at the school, James Toney stated we might not need a light tower at the school, he stated he doesn’t think the lights will interfere with the fireworks. James Toney stated that Briggs equipment will sponsor the light towers, 1 in the front and in the back. Tommy McDonald stated that we crank it up high, because the light is blinding to the bus drivers. James Toney stated that we have 1 singer confirmed for the evening event and Michael Boyett stated that his mother in law will sing the national anthem. Dan Morgan will check with Lizzy Conger to see if she is available to sign a patriotic song or ask Larry Taylor ’s daughter. Tommy McDonald questioned if we need a crew to unload, James Toney stated that we don’t have to unload, there is a crew provided for the stage. Corey Kirkland stated that Scott Gordon will be at the evening program and will be staged along the road by the school property. J ames Toney stated that he had some concern on where the portable toilets have been stationed and would like to move them near the electrical cages by the sidewalk; he stated that they will be a barrier around the lake. Corey Kirkland stated that we will have 2 gators from Brookside Equipment and 8 from Lansdowne, Corey will pick them up on Friday. The committee will vote on the Mora spirit award (corporate type sponsor) and the Evelyn B. Newman Award (individual award). 5.
