HomeMy WebLinkAboutSCAC Minutes 2015-09-08 Regular REGULAR MEETING Senior Citizens Advisory Committee September 8, 2015 Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee, this was held at the Activity Building in Meeting Room D at 9:00 a.m. on September 8, 2015 with all board members present, constitutes a quorum: Committee Members: Mr. Paul Gordner, Chair Ms. Jill Musser, Vice Chair Ms. Dorothy Montz, Regular Member Ms. Irma Trevino, Regular Member Mr. Dennis Rundell, Regular Member Ms. Yolanda Robles, Regular Member Ms. Nancy Mastrofrancesco, Alternate Member Staff/ Liaison: Jamie Eubanks, Assistant Senior Program Manager Michael Boyett, Recreation Superintendent The following items were discussed: 1. Mr. Paul Gordner called the meeting to order at 9:00am. 2. The invocation was given by Ms. Irma Trevino. 3. The August 11, 2015 minutes were approved. 4. Upcoming trips and events for the month of October include: a. We will take our monthly trip to Wal Mart on Monday, September 14, 2015 from 12:30 – 1:30, this is a free trip. On Monday, September 21, 2015 we will tour the Bryan Museum in Galveston, we will leave the building at 10:00am and return around 3:00pm; cost is $10 per person, and we will have lunch at The Spot. On Wednesday, September 23, 2015 we will go to Minute Maid Park for the Astros Game, we will leave at 11:00am and return around 5:00pm; cost is $5 per person and lunch is on your own. On Wednesday, September 30, 2015 we will tour the Beer Can House, we will leave at 9:00am and return around 3:00pm; cost is $10 per person and lunch is on your own at Hickory Hollow. b. We will have the fourth annual Christmas in September on Friday, September 4, 2015 from 9:00am – 5:00pm and Saturday, September 5, 2015 from 9:00am -4:00pm. On Wednesday, September 9, 2015 we will have our monthly Wii Bowling Tournament from 1:00 -3:00pm, sponsored by Kwik Kar of Friendswood. On Thursday September 10, 2015 we will have the AARP Driver Safety Course from 9:30am – 1:30pm. On Monday, September 14 we will have our birthday social from 12:30 – 1:00pm. Tuesday, September 15, 2015 from 12 – 1pm we will have guest speaker Carla Yager, from Bankers Life to talk about Medicare, options benefits and penalties. On Tuesday, September 22, 2015, from 12 – 1pm we will have a guest speaker from Houston Area Agency on Aging to talk about the Fall Prevention Program. On Thursday, September 24, 2015 from 1130 - 1230 we will have guest Speaker, Beth Young, Health and Wellness Educator, talk about Food and Beverage Choices. On Monday, September 28, 2015 we will have a movie matinee, showing The Buddy Holly Story, from 1:00 – 3:00pm. On Wednesday, September 30, 2015 we will have our monthly bingo game from 1:00 – 3:00pm, sponsored by Apostle Home Health. 5. Discussion and possible action regarding the Fall Picnic: The Fall will Picnic will take place on Thursday, October 8, 2015 from 11:00am – 1:00pm at Stevenson Park. We will serve hamburgers, chips, desserts and drinks. After lunch is served we will play bingo. 6. Discussion and possible regarding the Health Fair: The Health Fair will be on Tuesday, October 20, 2015 from 10:00am – 1:00pm at the Activity Building. Currently accepting vendor forms. 7. Report on the Casino Extravaganza: There were 150 participants at the Casino Extravaganza on Friday, August 14, 2015. There was great feedback about the event. One concern was participants that were not part of the center won a lot of the prizes, so it was suggested to have different tickets. 8. Report on the Christmas in September: Great turnout, positive feedback from the vendors and participants. A few suggestions on the sign placement in front of the building and also have a banner made to be put up over 518. 9. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Budget and Purchasing: Read and Reviewed 10. Report on the Activity Building Expansion: Drawings of the building include an expansion onto the side of the building, which would include a pickle ball/basketball court, an additional exercise area and new restrooms, additional storage. Need to set a meeting to get ideas and thoughts from all participants of the center. 11. Report from the Recreation Superintendent: None 12. Comments made by the Public: Toilet seat in women’s restroom is low and some have trouble using it. Check on Wifi for the building. 13. Comments made by the Committee Members: None. 14.
