HomeMy WebLinkAboutSCAC Minutes 2015-06-09 Regular REGULAR MEETING Senior Citizens Advisory Committee June 9, 2015 Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee, this was held at the Activity Building in Meeting Room D at 9:00 a.m. on June 9, 2015 with all board members present, constitutes a quorum: Committee Members: Mr. Paul Gordner, Chair Ms. Jill Musser, Vice Chair Ms. Dorothy Montz, Regular Member Ms. Frankie Santoro, Regular Member Ms. Kay Griffin, Regular Member Ms. Yolanda Robles, Alternate Member Staff/ Liaison: Jamie Eubanks, Assistant Senior Program Manager James Toney, Director of Parks and Recreation The following items were discussed: 1. Mr. Paul Gordner called the meeting to order at 9:00am. 2. The invocation was given by Ms. Kay Griffin. 3. The May 12, 2015 minutes were approved. 4. Upcoming trips and events for the month of July include: a. We will take our monthly trip to Wal Mart on Monday, July 6, 2015 from 12:30 – 1:30, this is a free trip. On Wednesday, July 8, 2015 we will attend the Gulf Greyhound Park, we will leave the building at 10:30am and return around 4:00pm; cost is $10 per person. On Wednesday, July 22, 2015 we will take a trip to the San Jacinto Museum of History, cost is $10 person; lunch on your own at Monument Inn. On Friday, July 31, 2015 we will head to the Pasadena Opry, we will leave the building at 6:00pm and return around 11:00pm, cost is $12 per person. b. On Wednesday, July 8, 2015 we will have our monthly Wii Bowling Tournament from 1:00 – 3:00pm, sponsored by Kwik Kar of Friendswood. On Monday, July 13, we will have our monthly birthday social from 12:00 – 12:30pm. On Wednesday, July 15, 2015 we will have a guest speaker from Friendswood Health Care Center talk about healthy living from 12:00 – 1:00pm. On Thursday, July 16, 2015 we will have our annual Watermelon Bash and Bingo from 1:00 – 3:00pm, sponsored by Gardens at Friendswood Lakes. On Thursday, July 23, 2015 we will have lunch for National Hot Dog Day; we will serve from 12:00 – 1:00pm. On Monday, July 27, 2015 we will have a movie matinee at the activity building from 1:00 – 3:00pm; we will serve popcorn and drinks. 5. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Watermelon Bash & Bingo: Thursday, July 16, 2015 from 1:00 – 3:00pm, sponsored by Susan Cavenders at Gardens at Friendswood Lakes. 6. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Lunch and Fun: Ideas for lunch: Chinese, Fish Tacos, Frito Pies, Chili, Fried Chicken, Soups, Salads, and Sandwiches. 7. Discussion and possible actions regarding the Budget and Purchasing: Read and Reviewed, 2lb weights. 8. Discussion regarding the Activity Building Expansion: In the Capital Improvement Plan there was potential of having the activity building expanded. There needs to be discussion on what the steps are and what needs to take place. We will need to get recommendations from the group and then get recommendation in front of council. George Cherepes the Project Coordinator for the City of Friendswood: A year to two year project and we will need to figure out if the building can support the second floor. We will need to get a preliminary design, budget, get bond issue ( or fundraiser) , review plans, bid, contract on bid, goes to council, water resources, renovations on current building, testing lab hired to make sure everything is done right, city project managers will be on site to make sure everything is by code. First step will be deciding what you want, plan of action, talk amongst group, city staff involved. Then take to council, get their buy in, how to fund it (sponsors, donors, general fund,), what’s the best way to go about it. Try and make it a reasonable increase, looking into the future. How the classes and participates have grown. Set up subcommittee, get all the pertinent information. 9. Report from James Toney, Director of Parks and Recreation: Bond projects: splash pad reopening, transformed a pool manager’s office to a restroom, small pavilion at Stevenson Park. New disc golf course in 1776 park. Keep Friendswood Beautiful won a Texas Grant. Sports Park, four new youth fields, new concession building, improve lighting. 10.
